What is REI’s business strategy? What role do networking and Internet technology play in this strategy? What management, organization, and technology issues does REI face in running its business? What role do telecommunications and the Internet play in solving these challenges? How effectively has REI used information systems and the Internet to meet its business strategy goals and maintain a competitive edge? These are the instructions from the professor, each case gives a problem or a situation that an organization has faced and then gives their response to that problem or situation. Your written analysis should give a very quick overview of whatever the problem or situation the organization is facing. Then look at the actions they took and analyze their response and why did they do what they choose to do? What is your analysis of their action? (Risky? A good move? Too little too late? Moving in the right direction? How does it fit with theories discussed in class or that the book has presented? (for example: transaction cost theory, customer lock-in?)) Your grade will depend in large part of your ability to combine the theories discussed in class with the issues presented in the cases. Finally, what role did information technology play in the case? Was it part of the problem or the solution or both? To improve your grade you should look at what has happened to the organization(s) since the case was written and determine if they took the right approach.
Some cases may have questions at the end – you are not to just give answers these questions – you will be marked down if you do. You can use the questions as a guide to help you think about the issues involved and incorporate any response you have as part of your written analysis.
