Your textbook offered a conflict oriented history of the American conquest of the West. This position focused on the unpleasant, unjust, questionable and problematic side of the West. In Turner’s paper, you have received a much more positive view of the role which the West played in the formation of America. Turner’s view focuses on the West as a harsh environment which reshaped those who entered it, and forced them to act in certain ways to survive. In the process, however, the West was also shaped into something quintessentially American by those settlers who survived. In the space below, please answer the following question.
